About Crabtree Nature Center

Crabtree Nature Center is a 446-acre protected natural area located in Princeton, Minnesota, encompassing diverse habitats including hardwood forests, wetlands, and meadows along the Rum River. The center provides a unique opportunity to experience a representative section of Minnesota's native ecosystems. Originally part of a family farm, the land was acquired by Sherburne County to be preserved as a natural area and outdoor education site. Visitors can walk or cycle on over 5 miles of well-maintained trails that wind through woodlands and wet areas alive with birds, amphibians, and native plants. The nature center itself features educational exhibits, a visitor center, and offers year-round programming for all ages, including guided hikes, nature camps, and workshops. The Rum River adds an important aquatic feature and supports diverse wildlife, including several species of migratory birds and waterfowl. Notable landmarks within the center include a restored oxbow, interpretive signs describing the local ecology, and observation decks for wildlife viewing. Crabtree Nature Center appeals to families, educators, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking hands-on learning and quiet natural settings close to the Twin Cities metropolitan area. It encourages environmental stewardship and offers a peaceful retreat with opportunities for photography, bird watching, and seasonal activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during winter.
